As we mentioned earlier today, Los Angeles native Baron Davis is headed home and he's bringing his beard and 21 points per game with him. The former Crossroads School and UCLA standout came to a verbal agreement with the LA's other team, making the Clippers suddenly relevant and a playoff contender. Baron credits the community for his decision telling ESPN, "I'm happy with where I'm going. A big reason is because of the impact and......

LAistory is a series that takes us on a journey to what came before to help us understand where we are today. So far we've been to Val Verde, Thelma Todd's Roadside Cafe, a house in Beverly Hills, Echo Park's Bonnie Brae House, Marineland of the Pacific, and Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale. Now we're going to take you out to the ballgame, some decades back... The arrival of the Dodgers in Los......

The city of Anaheim's challenge to have the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim remove their northern neighbors local from their name will have to wait until the pennant race heats up even more. The hearing has been postponed until September 11. No reason was given for the delay except that they had "good cause" to sit on it for the summer. At this rate, the Angels may not find out if they must change......

Hey, did you hear something about gas prices being really high? There was something on the news and a little blurb on the inter-web the other day. So what can you do for dear ol' dad this Sunday that won't burn up your wallet and set your pants on fire like a liar, liar? Well, you can keep the car in the garage, jump on the Metrolink, and head down to Anaheim to see......

With the Western Conference Champion Los Angeles Lakers (ahhhhhhh, that's nice) on hold for a week and the Blue Crew in the Big Apple taking on the Metropolitans, there's free stuff in Anaheim this weekend at Angel Stadium. The Angels (32-23) take on the Toronto Blue Jays (30-26) tonight through Sunday afternoon. Every Friday night home game ends with Big Bang fireworks which feel pretty damn close, especially if you're up in the nose bleeds.......

I’m an Angels fan. There. It’s out there and I feel pretty good about it. No longer will I feel the need to only wear red among my closest friends who will not snicker or judge me. I may even have a coming out party. I’m walking on eggshells as many of my colleagues here at LAist bleed Dodger Blue. Seriously, I’ve seen it. It’s really gross, like ink and ranch dressing. Being an......

In 1989 I was chewing on the strings of my glove while patrolling the infield for the North End Little League Tee-Ball Padres in my hometown of Bridgeport, CT. We didn't lose a game. We didn't win either - they don't keep score in tee-ball. That same year, ESPN's Buster Olney began his career as a baseball writer, covering the Nashville Sounds for the Nashville Banner. Rather than get analysis and insight on the 2008......

Memphis Tigers defeat UCLA Bruins 78-63. Memphis was too much for UCLA. While the Bruins kept it manageable for most of the game, the Tigers turned up the gear in the final five minutes to send the Bruins home. Darren Collison scored only two points before fouling out in the second half, and the Bruins couldn't get the ball to Kevin Love. Memphis will face Kansas Monday night in the championship game. San Diego......

Clippers defeat Seattle Sonics 102-84. Elton Brand's return from a torn Achille's tendon sparked the Clippers. Orginally slated to play just a few minutes to get back into game form, he ended up playing 25 minutes notching 19 points on 7-15 shooting off the bench. Giants defeat Dodgers 2-1. The game started weirdly when both starting pitchers (Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers and Tim Lincecum for the Giants) were pulled due to the impending storm.......

Angels defeat Twins 9-1. Catcher Mike Napoli and first baseman Casey Kotchman had solo homers to demolish the Twins. Jon Garland pitched eight innings for the Angels giving up six hits and one earned run in the fifth on 95 pitches. 95 pitches! For today the Angels pitching gives a sigh of relief. Dodgers defeat Giants 3-2. Dodger third base coach Larry Bowa almost ate umpire Ed Montague's head off after getting thrown out......

Dodgers defeats Giants 5-0. A 5-0 win to usher in the 50th anniversary in Los Angeles. The Dodgers looked like World Series contenders against a Giant's team many expect to lose more than 100 games. Jeff Kent hit his 18th opening day RBI with a two-run homer in the first inning, the most among active players. Brad Penny pitched 6 2/3 innings of shut out ball in which he admits he was subpar while......

Actor struggles to look afraid in face of bad SFX | Photo courtesy of Warner Brothers Despite a critical reception that could charitably be called awful, 10,000 B.C. rolled to the top of the box office this weekend, taking in $35.7M. Fellow newcomer (and fellow terrible movie) College Road Trip finished a distant second with $14M, almost twice that of the resilient Vantage Point ($7.5M/$51.6M). Semi-Pro sunk in its second weekend ($5.9M/$24.8M) but still......

All photos by Kelly C. Gallamore for LAist. The Los Angeles Avengers kicked off this weekend with a comeback win over the New Orleans VooDoo, marking the ninth straight season we've had pro football back in the City of Angels. Last year the Avengers finished second in the American Western division and won their wild card round of the Arena Football League playoffs. Since the recent opening of LACMA's Broad Contemporary (BCAM) a flurry of international eyes have been on Los Angeles, and an ensuing flurry of words have issued forth in review. It seems irresistible to review the Broad without also reviewing the city that houses it, which was precisely the tact taken by Chris Haslam in London's Sunday Times today. It takes Haslam seven paragraphs into his article to even mention the precise reason he......

One year ago, Los Angeles County received the distinction of being number one in the nation for the amount of medical marijuana dispensaries in the country, with close to 50 in operation. Recently, picking up your prescribed pot got theoretically easier with the launching of the world's first marijuana vending machines here in the City of Angels, which is causing international waves from objectors who cast doubt on the therapeutic validity of the Schedule 1......

When the chips are down and you need cash to settle up some legal matters, unloading some real estate is a good move. Which is precisely why the Roman Catholic Archdiocese has sold off their 3424 Wilshire Boulevard Archdiocesan Catholic Center to Jamison Properties for a cool $31 million. Of course, that $31 million is just a drop in a bucket with a pricetag of $660 million for the church's past sins. According to the......

Bulldog 3. German Shepherd 4. Yorkshire Terrier 5. Golden Retriever 6.......

Last week a friend showed up with a lovely wrapped pumpkin bread for us. I immediately asked, "Is that a Monastery of the Angels pumpkin bread???" No one was impressed with my psychic abilities, but I was impressed with that bread! Not just because there is a cloistered monastery in Hollywood. I was amazed because I have been baking that pumpkin bread for 20 years, ever since the LA Times published the recipe. In......

For baseball fans under the age of 35, reading the Mitchell report should be like taking repeated shots to the groin without the Nutty Buddy. Former Senate Majority Leader (and current Boston Red Sox director) George Mitchell just announced the results of his 20-month, $20 million investigation into allegations of widespread steroid usage in baseball. The long-awaited, 409-page Mitchell Report (document here) identifies more than 80 current and former players as being linked to using performance-enhancing drugs. While the report casts blame on the lack of institutional control within baseball as much as the players themselves that cheated, what......

The rain came and delivered traffic, crashes, power outages and no snow in the mountains. Boo! A developer keeps on pushing to build a 1500-home project right next to Disney. Obviously, Mickey wants the area reserved for tourism. He's so greedy. It's probably not a good idea to hang a noose at your workplace, even if it is Halloween at the Port of LA. Barry Bonds was in federal court today to face the music ... sort of. Southern California's least favorite son pleaded not guilty to four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. After showing off his latest threads (the wire reports had little else to say so they raved about his "impeccably tailored" look), Bonds walked back out a free man. He was essentially released on his own recognizances, but would owe Uncle......
