After three decades of dreaming and planning, it looks like the federal government is finally paying attention to an expensive MagLev train line that would carry passengers between Las Vegas and Anaheim at speeds up to 300 miles per hour along the 270-mile route. The Federal Railroad Administration will give $45 million in congressional earmarked dollars to the first phase of the route, which will go from Las Vegas to the state border in Primm, NV, according to the LA Times.

A quick 20-minute trip to Anaheim via high speed rail could be a reality in less than ten years, according to Metro, whose board today officially supported the California High Speed Rail initiative, as well as a first segment that would connect Los Angeles to Anaheim. The segment within the 800-mile system could begin construction as early as 2012, finishing six years later, and is considered to be the most "construction ready.” “Union Station will become transformed into a world-class, 21st Century intermodal transit hub that will serve the County of Los Angeles in ways that are very exciting to imagine," said Metro CEO Art Leahy. Metro estimates the creation of 75,000 jobs, enabling the possibility for $8 billion in federal stimulus money. Voters last November already passed Prop 1a, a $9.95 billion bond for the state's high speed rail system. The Board also voted to support general improvements to the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor, mainly served by Metrolink and Amtrak Surfliners, for more efficient and coordinated service.

After one death and a shooting this week, some fans are wondering what happened to their sweet Orange County Disneyfied Angels baseball experience. The LA Times takes a look, finding some interesting comments made on the internet: "In a ballpark that once had a no-alcohol section for families and won over youngsters with Disney promotions, fans have taken notice, erupting on message boards and on Twitter. Several threatened to stop going to games. 'Not willing to risk family safety because of gangbangers & thugs in SF, LA Dodgers, and now Anaheim Angels,' one fan wrote. Many took shots at the 'Los Angeles' in the Angels name. 'When did Angel Stadium turn into Dodger Stadium?' one person asked. 'Guess it really HAS turned into an LA team,' another wrote."

The circus is coming to Orange County soon, but not before a show of a whole other kind hits town, which is due to take place midday tomorrow in the heart of Anaheim. The show is actually a protest organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who will express their displeasure about what they believe is the unethical treatment of circus animals by "having one of its members, 32-year-old Melissa Sehgal, pushed through downtown Anaheim in a cage, nearly nude except for tiger-stripe body paint," according to the OC Register.

If you're live, work or play in Anaheim, take heed! Tonight has two big events happening in the area. First is National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoff game (Ducks vs. Detroit) at the Honda Center. Mix that in with the Anaheim/LA/Whatever vs. Boston game at Angel Stadium. The killer? Both begin at 7:00 p.m. so officials at both are warning of heavy traffic on the surrounding streets, freeways and freeway exits between 5 and 8:00 p.m.

A newsbit posted this morning on OC Metblogs about Disney prepping a third amusement park called DisneySea America--a venture based around water-themed rides and attractions--turned out to be more for the birds than the fish. The OC Register responded to the ensuing hubub: "Everyone can calm down. There’s no third Disney theme park on the way to Anaheim." Check your calendars, people. That's right, it's April 1st. Thanks to top late-night picture-taker Drew "Rukes" Ressler, we can see what goes bump in the night, and who dances to that bump. Last month we did. This month we present evidence, that despite the cold fist of the economy, SoCal is full of people dancing, led by those DJs who make us dance. That, and Rukes paid a visit to rockers Last Exit.

This is going to get old fast. In response to Barack Obama's big "State of the Union" like speech last night, the Republicans, via Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, had sharp criticisms of the President and stimulus bill including trying to reduce the MagLev train between Anaheim and Las Vegas to "bridge to nowhere" levels:

Although there is no specific mention of the high speed train between the Los Angeles area and Las Vegas, Republicans are crying foul.

With one day left until tomorrow's Twestival, the event is continuing to grow. In addition to the LA Twestival at downtown's 740 Club, now Anaheim will host their own Twestival tomorrow night at the Sheraton Park.

                            

The Kings were riding a comfy 3-0 lead late in the second period on Thursday night, and were ready to cruise to a victory, but they didn't account for Anaheim's Bobby Ryan. The rookie who began his season in the minors and was called up in November put on a clinic, scoring a hat trick (three goals) against Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick in the span of 2:21 to set a new franchise record and also tie the game.

The smell that was produced was likened to chlorine, and although no guests were evacuated, employees near the affected area were, and one "security guard complained of dizziness but refused transportation to a hospital." The area was then ventilated, and hotel operations remained as expected in the Happiest Place on Earth.

The iron fist of the law came down in what could be one of the most contentious sports-related trials in recent memory: Will the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim change their name back to just the simpler and more geographically-correct Anaheim Angels?

Pumpkin, the turkey pardoned by President Bush on Wednesday in Washington DC, was honored as the grand marshal at Disneyland's Thanksgiving Day Parade today in Anaheim. He, along with Pecan--the backup turkey--will now be part of the park's holiday display of live reindeer. After that, the two will retire to Disneyland's Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland.

                     

The Los Angeles Kings were only able to muster one lone goal in their two games over the weekend, which resulted in a pair of losses. On Saturday night they dropped a home game against the Nashville Predators by the score of 3-1, and on Sunday they went scoreless to lose to the Anaheim Ducks, 2-0. Their next test comes on Thursday, when superstar Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals skate into Staples Center at 7:30.

The Los Angeles Kings fell behind by two goals in the opening period of Tuesday night's meeting against their crosstown rivals, the Anaheim Ducks. A fight between tough guys Raitis Ivanans and George Parros seemed to spark Los Angeles, who came storming back with five unanswered goals to eventually win the contest by a 6-3 margin.

Via Gawker, we find Homethinking who has launched a nifty tool comparing neighborhoods in one city to another city. It's fun, but beware: their methodology is not income based ('cause rent is just a tad higher on Manhattan), but rather demographics such as "age, marital status, whether the household has kids or not and the frequency of arts and culture activities," as they explain. It's a start...

It was my understanding that the team that wins a division is also supposed to be the same team that reports to work during the playoffs, not its evil and less talented twin (no offense to Minnesota). The Angels came into Friday night's game down 1-0 and in need of a win before hopping a plane out to Beantown for Sunday's possible series ending game. With the best record in the regular season behind them and $124 million on the field in red and white, a win at home was crucial. Unfortunately for Angels fans, we've witnessed the film version of a long running and critically acclaimed TV show these last two games, The Simpsons Movie of baseball, if you will.

This Monrovia man was arrested last week at Disneyland following a five-day crime spree that began on September 19th. After carjackings, home-invasion robberies and an attempted murder, the 27-year-old Anthony Hislar visited Disneyland with a couple of people before his arrest just outside the park (was he there rewarding himself or something?). LA County Sheriff's tipped off the Anaheim Police saying that Hislar was at the park. Police found him leaving the park and followed him from there.

Could it actually happen? A spokesman for BetOnline.com e-mailed over saying he has calculated the odds: "With the Dodgers two wins away from a trip to the NLCS, and the Angels in a 1-0 hole... [the] odds on a possible Dodgers-Angels 'Freeway' World Series," are 7-to-1, he explained. "Not to be left out, a Cubs-White Sox 'Red Line' World Series is currently at 9-to-1." If that happens, can Mayor V and the Anaheim Mayor make a bet? If the Dodgers win, Anaheim can't use "Los Angeles" in their team name anymore. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. pfffft.

An Anaheim police officer responding to an 8 a.m. indecent exposure report at the Best Western Raffles Inn wound up shot in the leg on the scene. According to reports, the two officers who arrived at the hotel parking lot saw the suspect near his vehicle, and the shots were fired, although it is not clear if it was the suspect doing the shooting. The suspect fled following the incident and has not been found.

With the Western Conference Champion Los Angeles Lakers (ahhhhhhh, that's nice) on hold for a week and the Blue Crew in the Big Apple taking on the Metropolitans, there's free stuff in Anaheim this weekend at Angel Stadium. The Angels (32-23) take on the Toronto Blue Jays (30-26) tonight through Sunday afternoon. Every Friday night home game ends with Big Bang fireworks which feel pretty damn close, especially if you're up in the nose bleeds. You may get a singed eyebrow or two.
