Not an Immigration Raid: American Apparel Forced to Fire 1,800 Workers

The Bush era of ICE raids are over. That, however, does not mean ICE is on the fritz. In what the New York Times calls "a showcase for the Obama administration’s effort to reduce illegal immigration," companies are being forced to "to dismiss unauthorized workers."

In Silver Lake: 'It’s kind of an American Apparel ad come to life'

You can thank Terence McFarland, the executive director of the Los Angeles Stage Alliance, for that fantastic quote about Sweaty Sundays (and Wet Wednesdays), a popular updated Richard Simmons dance exercise class " to a soundtrack of indie rock, techno, and 1980s new wave hits new wave" in Silver Lake. The New York Times takes an interest--"Silver Lake, a hipster neighborhood in Los Angeles"--while Gawker ponders if Williamsburg hipsters in Brooklyn can step up to the challenge.

Your Favorite American Apparel T-Shirt Was Possibly Stitched by an Undocumented Worker

While it might not be surprising that American Apparel has made the headlines once again for their business practices, it is a touch ironic that the company who is behind the "Legalize L.A." movement for immigration reform revealed today "that the government has found that 1,800 of its employees are either illegally working in the U.S. or potentially illegal to work," according to USA Today.

An ever-increasing workload, the recession’s effect on one’s monthly Amoeba habit, a rapidly approaching membership into the “mid-thirties” club - a million and one reasons to stop seeing live music as frequently as my liver could once withstand. But last year’s SXSW/Coachella springtime juggernaut left its indelible mark and a few bands moved to the top of the “must see again and again” list, Cut Copy’s electropop/dance rock eking out the top spot. Who doesn’t love a band you can jump around to? It’s like everything good about the 90s rave scene (without the glow sticks and wide-legged pants, natch) served up with a side of early 80s nu-wave synth.

As mentioned last Friday, the adult industry has gathered this week for AVN's annual Adult Entertainment Expo and Adult Movie Awards in Las Vegas, with the convention running through Sunday at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, and the awards show on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. And while Thursday, the first day of the convention, was only open to members of the adult industry and press, it will be open to the public from today onward.

Jesus Sanchez at The Eastsider LA was curious who be the richest in the land of the hippest. Hypothesis: American Apparel's Dov Charney: "Last year, Charney, who sold off his company but remains in charge as CEO, earned a salary topping $8 million. In addition, the company granted him stock options worth nearly another $8 million. Of course, Charney, like everyone else with stock and a 401k, has taken a big hit. Still, the American Apparel stock he got when he sold the company is now worth, at least on paper, nearly $200 million, based on Thursday's closing stock price. That would buy enough $17, American Apparel pocket t-shirts for just about everyone living in Los Angeles and Orange counties."

That was fast. I guess this proves that billboards and a massive, massive, massive amount of flyers put around the neighborhood can get your dog back. For background on Hedkayce (that's the dog's name), check out yesterday's story.

Update: Hedkayce, the dog, has been found.

The Silver Lake and Echo Park area was slammed with flyers this weekend showing this dog, pictured above. And if flyers were not enough, two billboards, back-to-back, at Sunset and Alvarado featured the cute dog asking anyone who has seen it or has found it to contact the owner.

It's about time Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa goes public on the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the Los Angeles area. Last week, 60 workers were arrested on immigration violations in Torrance and 130 undocumented workers were busted in Van Nuys back in February. Nationwide, 4,900 work-site arrests occurred in the 2007 fiscal year, a 45% increase since 2001.

The good folks at the New York City based blog, ANIMAL, have let us use this photo to share with you. Welcome to American Apparel owner Dov Charney's supposed front doorstep in Silver Lake (maybe Hollywood Hills actually). Now this is one way you can greet visitors to your home.

We always encourage you to press that little recommend button at the bottom right hand corner of every post if you enjoyed it. For one, it tells us what you want more of here it LAist. So here's this week's five most recommended posts, as recommended by you:

How about this for an opening about the founder of American Apparel in today's New York Post? "Dov Charney walks around his office in his underwear, sleeps with employees, and calls women bitches, sluts, whores and the c-word - and that's the stuff he admits to."

This is why we do all of our Christmas shopping online: first the FBI reported possible terrorist threats to Chicago and Los Angeles malls this holiday season, then took it back. Hey kids! You too can grow up to be a pervert with a social conscience! Dov Charney just signed on for a deal with American Apparel's partner company that could net him millions per year. A Small World it's not: Disneyland is remodeling...

Silly Jack Weiss! He thinks the Valley is different from the City. Tsk tsk! The Daily News takes the Councilman to task (lovingly) for his slip of the tongue. Halloween events abound in the city this time of year, and LAist is your best source for the hottest spooky spots: check out our continuing Halloween coverage here. OMGZZZ Kitten Cops! I can has ratburgerz?? The LAPD is recruiting feral cats to root out rodents...

For the past several seasons The Gap has been in a serious creative rut with completely lackluster clothes and equally dull ad campaigns, but the company aims to change all that with today's introduction of a limited edition collection for women designed by three hot, up-and-coming fashion designers. Following in the footsteps of mass-market clothing retailers H&M, Topshop and Target, all of whom have commissioned high-end designers to create limited edition clothing lines, The...

With clothes made in downtown Los Angeles, indie fashion manufacturer American Apparel is about to be sold for $382.5 million to a "little-known" investment firm. The New York Times reports that the company, founded by the always entertaining Dov Charney, will announce its sale tomorrow. The new owners? Endeavor Acquisition Corporation, owned by Jonathan J. Ledecky, who will keep Charney on as CEO. The sale is almost as surprising as the history of American...

It's time. As much as we hated seeing silver stars and winter white wonderland at the Beverly Center as early as October (did they completely gloss over Halloween or did we just miss it when they were promoting it back in, say, July?), we must accept that Holiday shopping is indeed upon us now that it's December. To make it easier on us all, LAist has toiled, worn out our mouse clicking fingers, scoured...

Our final remembrance of Sunset Junction is this bizarre scene that we stumbled across on Sunday. After a few beers we were very confused. We understood the free haircuts and it looked like they were doing a radio show. But what was going on with the American Apparel girls? That was them right? They looked great and they danced great and we loved their energy but what did they have to do with radio,...

We think so.

So we spied this craigslist posting the other day under "writing gigs":

t-shirt porn: In case you haven't had enough of American Apparel's Dov Charney, he's the subject of a profile in today's NY Times. They go to his pepto-pink factory, they go to his Echo Park house. We're not sure what happens after that because we just couldn't go on any further. Anybody want to tell us how it ends?

If you're celebrating Christmas but haven't yet finished your shopping, there's not a moment to spare. A couple of our contributors have some shopping spots they love that might be a good bet.

American Apparel is known for two things: the antics of its iconoclastic/pornographic founder Dov Charney, and its really excellent cotton t-shirts.

We're looking for new interviewers. We're also giving away a signed poster from The Chumscrubber. We opened a merch store as well featuring LAist branded American Apparel shirts (amongst other things). And we talked about...

For Independence Day weekend, here are some events that involve hanging out with social activists while listening to good music and wearing cute clothes:

New York caught up with Miss Goldberg on the corner of Bleecker Street and West 11th Street to ask her about her street ensemble.

The 1,600-square-foot shop on Place du Marché-Saint-Honoré carries T-shirts in a multitude of colors and shapes, apparel and accessories for the entire family, including dogs.

In an effort to chip away at the large number of sweatshops in Los Angeles's complicated garment industry, the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that requires contractors who manufacture uniforms and related goods bought by municipal entities to agree to a code of conduct. Pre-approved contractors and firms must adhere to workplace laws or risk losing the City of Los Angeles as a client.
