American Eagle Plane Bumps into Another at LAX

Late yesterday afternoon, a San Diego bound American Eagle backing out of the gate bumped into another Embraer that was empty sitting at its respective gate. The 40 passengers and 3 crew were not injured, but both planes sustained minor damage. American Airlines booked passengers on other flights to San Diego as the National Transportation Safety Board began to investigate.

Success! It was a smooth landing for American Airlines flight 1586 shortly before 1:00 p.m. PST today. The aircraft was carrying 136 passengers to Toronto when it blew a tire upon takeoff this morning from LAX. Background information can be found here.

An American Airlines Boeing 757 made an emergency landing today at LAX due to smoke reported by the pilot. The flight carrying passengers from San Francisco to Miami was also carrying hazardous materials, but, at first it was unknown if they were the cause the incident that diverted the plane to the airport. Later, FAA officials said that the material was hydrochloric acid and it was not the cause -- it probably came from a recently serviced hydraulic system. All passengers disembarked from the plane safely at Terminal 4, said LAX Spokesman Marshall Lowe to LAist. Passengers are now being booked on other flights.

"Of the 595 flights American scrubbed today, eight were at Los Angeles International Airport, where the carrier has 92 daily departures. A small number of flights were also canceled at airports in Burbank, Ontario and San Diego," reported the LA Times just after 10:00 a.m.

Anyone like Amtrak? Road trips? Private jets? Really long bicycle rides? Because the airline industry is just not fun these days, especially for American Airlines customers. After yesterday's blow to the travelscape, it was announced this morning that an additional 900 flights were cancelled. Locally, 15 of the 92 LAX departures were axed -- an improvement from yesterday's 25. Additionally, airports in Burbank, Ontario and San Diego all had a small number of cancellations according to the LA Times.

What the hell is up with air travel these days?

Delta and American Airlines are playing their "better safe than sorry" cards today after canceling a 133 and 132 flights respectively this morning on MD80 aircraft that were due for wiring inspections, at least 8 of which were domestic flights out of LAX.

Terminal One was evacuated early this morning after security screeners saw something that resembled a grenade, prompting a near 40-minute evacuation of the Southwest Airlines terminal. After officials identified it as a toy grenade, operations went back to normal. LAX officials told KNBC that passengers should be reminded "not to pack anything that resembles a weapon" and "recommended that travelers alert security screeners ahead of time if they have anything in their possession that could be mistaken for a weapon."

Late Monday night at LAX, an Australian-bound Qantas Boeing 747 blew four tires while attempting to take off. The pilot aborted the takeoff after a warning light went on, braking suddenly, damaging the tires as the plane came to a rest to the side of a taxiway. It is unknown what caused the light

Back in 1996, Mary J. Blige provided vocals to the hook of "Can't Knock the Hustle," the second single off of Jay-Z's debut album, Reasonable Doubt. 12 years, 12 Grammys and 70 million records sold later, Jigga Man and MJB are back at it again, co-headlining 25 shows across North America.

Since the beginning of 2007, there have been nine "close calls" on LAX's runways with the latest on Wednesday evening at 8:43 p.m. An American Airlines jet arriving from Baja California just landed on the outer runway and needed to cross the inner runway where a Mexicana Airlines jet was preparing for take off.

The air traffic controller told the American Airlines pilot to stop before crossing the inner runway, Gregor told the newspaper, but the pilot read back instructions that he was going to proceed across the runway to a terminal gate.

And that's just American Airlines!

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and several smiles as well as lots of cash were raised by some plucky urban ironing. London is apparently full of lies and whales: one of these things is true. We leave that up to you to figure out.

For a band that waited 20 years to get back together, and for a band that knew that they were going to announce their reunion tour today at the Whisky, they sure didn't have many tour dates lined up. The Police are arguably the most anticipated reunion tour in recent memory. Only a Pink Floyd reunion, one would think, could eclipse this summer's tour but when it came time for the Police to cough...
