You know it's summer in LA when Highland in Hollywood becomes even more of a traffic nightmare than usual when the Hollywood Bowl "officially" opens. (We guess the annual Playboy Jazz Festival is the unofficial opening?) Tonight, there's a star-studded opening night gala with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Josh Groban, who'll be inducted during the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will be conducted by Thomas Wilkins, with guest performers Roger Daltrey, Angélique Kidjo, Frederica von Stade and Trisha Yearwood. Tickets are $17-$103.

                     

You saw the video, but here's some of what went down during Weezer's music video shoot of their song "Troublemaker," as seen through the eyes of LAist photographers Tom Andrews and Michael Zampelli. Many world records were attempted, but not all were successful like the longest guitar cable used in a music video. However, they did earn five world records: Largest Air Guitar Ensemble (consisting of 233 participants), Largest Game of Dodgeball (consisting of two teams of 50), Longest Guitar Hero World Tour Marathon (lasting 10 hours 12 minutes and 54 seconds), Most People in a Custard Pie Fight (consisting of 120 people) and Most People Riding on a Skateboard (22 people managed to ride on the skateboard).

                 

We at LAist are sad to report that there is no longer any point to making art, recording music or even writing something in that Live Journal we all know you have (even if you've set it to "private" so no one knows how much you really hate that one friend of yours.) Everything our civilization could possibly contribute to the universe has been effectively and entirely topped by 20 contestants - three surly, drunken and lightly celebritized judges - a crowd full of hyperpartisan supporters - and three straight hours of Air Guitar Air Guitar Air Guitar.

”In the Flesh: L.A.,” the monthly reading series meant to titillate your, umm, flesh, is held the last Thursday of each month at Freddy and Eddy, beginning at 8 p.m.. The evening’s hosted and curated by writer/editor Carly Milne (Sexography, Hooking Up, Naked Ambition). Readings tonight come from: Jenny Block (“Open”), Regina Lynn (“Sexier Sex”), Maggie Marr (“Secrets of the Hollywood Girls Club”), Rob Roberge (“More Than They Could Chew”) and Eugene Robinson (Fight). The event’s free, but a suggested $10 donation at the door will be donated to the Rape and Incest National Network.

Shredding ensued at last night’s LA regional competition of the US Air Guitar Championships at the Key Club in West Hollywood. 16 air shredders competed to represent L.A. in the US Championships in NYC on August 16, and a possible chance to represent the US at the world championships in Finland.

Los Angeles... The final stop on the US Air Guitar Championship tour. These are the voyages of the shredding immortals. Their 14-city mission: To seek out fresh, new moves on invisible axes and win a slot to compete for the national title in New York City.
