December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. This year we asked some of the staffers what inspired them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

This year, Aimee Mann gave a Christmas gift to the world by sharing videos from her third annual Christmas show. These four gems are just as good as their 2007 counterparts, and the 2008 cast includes guests such as Mann's talented husband, Michael Penn, a hilarious Michael Cera spouting f-bombs in protest of being cast as Tiny Tim, Paul F. Tompkins as a ghost who has technical difficulties delivering his message via Skype, plus John. C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, Grant Lee Phillips and John Krasinski.

Saturday night, La Luz De Jesus Gallery is hosting a CD release party & signing for the new Aimee Mann record @#%&! Smilers, featuring the work of critically hailed artist Gary Taxali.

On June 3, Aimee Mann’s new album, @#%&*! Smilers, will be released on her SuperEgo Records label. Throughout the 13 tracks, Mann delivers a musical experience that packs an emotional punch. The songs hint at her playful side and deliver melodies you’ll want to hum for the rest of the day. LAist caught up with Mann to get the scoop on her new record.

We're four months out from the official start of the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Season and the schedule is nearly complete. Single tickets won't go on sale for a couple months but the Bowl is offering 16 different series packages, each containing 3-5 genre-specific performances.

For those who joined us last night (thank you for coming!), we witnessed many hot and bothered moments with an excellent band we've never hard before -- The Makers (we can't find their website, help). They are in residency at Seven Grand every Tuesday and we highly recommend checking them out. For tonight, first night residencies for this month happen at the Viper Room, Hotel Cafe and the Silverlake Lounge (see our Guide to February Rock Music Residencies). We're feeling a bit rustic today, so we recommend Brian Wright & the Waco Tragedies at Hotel Cafe.

Usually Tuesday nights are slow for music in this town. Not tonight -- the spirit of Super Tuesday and democracy must have rung clear to bookers. Of course, LAist is having a party too, starting at 7:00 p.m. at Seven Grand. Choices, choices.

They're sure to fill up soon, but as of 9 a.m. this morning, you can still make reservations to see Aimee Mann at Largo on August 22, 23 or 24. Seeing her in such a small venue is a rare treat, and the cover charge will probably be only $20 (plus a $15 per person food minimum for dinner reservations).

For us there is no better LA street fair than the Sunset Junction annual event in the Silver Lake stretch of Sunset Blvd. One can enjoy eating chicken on a stick and drinking a beer while peoplewatching the hipsters, the kids, those of alternative lifestyles, and the random tourists who don't really know what they've stumbled into. The volunteer "donation" is now a hard $15 admission, but for all the good music, good food,...
