Duvall Denies Affairs, Says they were Tall Tales

So Orange County Assemblyman Michael Duvall (R-Yorba Linda) yesterday resigned after being caught on video telling sordid tales of his alleged affairs. Apparently, those were just stories, he said in a statement: "I want to make it clear that my decision to resign is in no way an admission that I had an affair or affairs. My offense was engaging in inappropriate story-telling and I regret my language and choice of words.

Despite Affairs, Duvall Used 'Family Values' to Vote Against Gay Issues

Lorri L. Jean, CEO of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, released a pointed statement this afternoon regarding Republican Michael Duvall, the Orange County Assemblyman who today resigned after a local TV station exposed a video of him crudely bragging about his extra-marital affairs, presumably with at least one lobbyist, according to reports. Jean's main point? Despite his family values when it came to opposing gay issues, he had no problem cheating:

Former Democratic Presidential candidate contender John Edwards is now admitting that he had an extra-marital affair with Rielle Hunter, but denies that he is the father of her child. Edwards initially denied the reports of the affair, as first broken by the National Enquirer, which claimed he had a rendezvous with the divorced model Hunter at a Los Angeles-area hotel that involved him seeing what they called their "love child." The Senator has been on some speculators' short lists for potential running mates for Barack Obama, but Edwards' involvement in Obama's candidacy and the upcoming DNC in Denver are most likely questionable following this admission. Edwards discusses the affair on an ABC newscast tonight during an interview with Bob Woodruff.

Follow-up reporting has been sparse in the days since the National Enquirer's alleged (for the second time in a year) that former Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards was embroiled in a "love-child scandal" with 44-year-old videographer Rielle Hunter (aka Lisa Druck) at the Beverly Hilton. Both Hunter and Edwards denied having the tabloid's initial salacious cover story last October.

The National Enquirer is at it again. After last year's "love child" scandal (aided by Huffington Post) that eventually died down, today, the Enquirer leads with this, claiming that "Vice Presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards was caught visiting his mistress and secret love child at 2:40 this morning in a Los Angeles hotel." They say that their reporters waited around until they saw Edwards leaving, approached him, but Edwards wouldn't talk and ran into the bathroom for 15 minutes until security ousted the writer and photographer. The story was so huge today, that a link from Drudge apparently crashed the National Enquirer's website.

Now that his extramarital shenanigans with Telemundo newscaster Mirthala Salinas have firmly supplanted his other accomplishments in the eyes of many Angelenos, pundits' tongues are a-wagging over the potential ramifications to his long-term mayoral career. Or, put more simply, can he move beyond Mirthala? While some commentators, such as San Jose State's Larry Gerston, have already written off Villaraigosa's future prospects, advising him not to "make any plans to run for the Democratic nomination in...
