Normally we're not starstruck but when Robert Downey Jr. joined Jon Favreau for the commentary edition of the Iron Man screening at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica last Saturday, we couldn't help but squeal with delight. He emerged from the shadows in the back of the theater and took the stage to a standing ovation. Eeeee! We were in the same room with the guy who stole the movie from Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder, the actor who made Tony Stark of Iron Man a lovable (and sexy) war monger…and he was in Weird Science!

Author and USC professor Gina Nahai and actress Bahar Soomekh (Crash) read from Nahai’s latest book Caspian Rain – about a family falling apart just before the Islamic revolution in Iran. Immediately following, there’s a discussion of the changing lives of women of the Middle East, and relationships between Iran’s Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as how these communities interact in Los Angeles, “home to the largest population of Iranians outside Tehran.”

It's a sparklie!! The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica is host today to the 25th Anniversary (yes, really) of this 1982 masterpiece about a sick mouse, a sinking house, Dom Deluise as a crow in a blouse, and magic rats. I'd write more about it but I'm busy gathering my amulet. The Secret Of NIMH -- 25th Anniversary! @ The Aero Theatre Sunday July 29 1328 Montana Avenue Santa Monica 3pm...

As members of the excellent American Cinematheque, we couldn't help but notice that the film-screening nonprofit recently launched a second venue: the newly-restored Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The Max Palevsky Aero Theatre, to be exact. We keep seeing the name, in the Cinematheque e-mails, on the wall at LACMA, on the cover of this book, even in the credits of a handful of films. Once shrouded in mystery, now Google explains all: Max Palevsky, a philosophy major, founded the computer company Scientific Data Systems in the 1960s, making computers for NASA and getting bought out by Xerox before the decade came to a close. Then came the movie-produing, art collecting, and politicking an active democrat, Palevsky supported Tom Bradley in his first mayoral run and major campaign finance reform initiatives in recent years. Not to get all gushy, but it's kinda cool that he's investing in his home city, financing the restoration of a theater so we can see, say, a 1950 noir about a frustrated mailman. More captains of industry should be so bent.
We are all about movies that people either love or hate. Todd Solondz's Palindromes appears to be one of those flicks. Film Threat falls on the side of love for this disturbing tale of a 13 year old desperate to have a child. The 13 year old is played by 6 different people of varying ages, ethnicities, and genders in an attempt to force the audience to consider their own assumptions and prejudices about teen pregnancy.
Fresh off of impressing folks with their energetic set at SXSW, Art-pop band Maximo Park is at Cinespace tonight at 10pm. Rumor also has it that this is the after party for Bloc Party's Troubadour show tonight as well as to celebrate the release of their new album today.
