Lane Lights Mean The 110 Freeway Goes Both Ways

Surely you have noticed the cool new blue lane lights on the 110 Freeway delineating the transition lane to the 5 North (see a video embedded below). The lighted pavement markers, or Smart-stud systems, are a way to finally stop all of those jerks from sneaking into the front of the line when we have all been waiting patiently in line for the 5 North like good citizens. Plus they make your night-time drive more psychedelic, like you are at the laserium.

A series of innovative and futuristic type of lighted and magnetic studs will be placed along the 110 Freeway out of downtown to help ease traffic congestion on the the northbound 5 freeway later this year. Basically, "at peak hours, the 'smart studs' would illuminate to automatically open a second connector lane on the 110, easing the long lines," explains the LA Times. If you know anything about this particular connector, you know it can be traffic hell.

Around 2 p.m., Caltrans shut down Interstate 5 between Parker Rd. in Castaic and the Grapevine to the north, cutting off the main route between Central and Southern California.

Remember when artist Richard Ankrom posed as a Caltrans employee and "fixed" the 110 North to 5 North (the left lane after the four tunnels) sign? He made it easier for commuters unfamiliar with the route when he added the directions to a freeway sign? It took him nine months and it was so well done Caltrans kept it up and did not press charges (we called Caltrans and the sign he put up is still up today).

If you're heading out northbound out of Los Angeles County, take note. If you were going to Comic-Con or just heading towards San Diego, today's truck crash/fire was not helpful (should have taken the train, the Surfliner to San Diego is a beautiful and chill ride). This morning, "a Vons big rig crashed into a disabled vehicle on southbound Interstate 5 near Pulgas Road, flipped over and burst into flames... leaving all but one lane of southbound I-5 blocked for hours," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Apparently, Vons was "en route" to "recover their product." Okay, then. Look out for any pre-charred ribs the next time you're at Vons.
