911 and multiple media calls to the Los Angeles Fire Department indicated that there was smoke at the 405 Freeway and Howard Hughes Blvd. Upon further investigation, there was no concern, it was just dust: "Smoke Scare due to construction," Melissa Kelley at the LAFD wrote in an alert. An anonymous phone call alerted police Sunday morning to a murder scene in a makeshift homeless encampment alongside the 405 freeway in a dense brush-filled patch of land in Long Beach. The victims--two women and three males-- appear to be homeless, but have not been officially identified. They were all shot, some multiple times.

What was a man doing walking across the 405 Freeway in West LA late Saturday night? Unfortunately, he died when he was struck by a Nissan Altima around 12:45 a.m. "The pedestrian also caused 'seven or eight cars' to crash and that four lanes of the freeway in the immediate area were blocked for about two hours. None of the motorists sustained serious injuries," the CHP relayed to the LA Times.

Police are treating the scene where five homeless people were found dead this morning as a murder scene. An anonymous 8:30 a.m. call alerted police to the makeshift camp in a "dense brush-filled area between some commercial buildings and a freeway interchange on West Wardlow Road just east of Santa Fe Avenue, according to Long Beach police Sgt. Dina Zapalski," per CBS2. The area is abut the 405/710 freeway interchange forcing some closures on a collector road and transition road between the freeways.

Since it's considered not only the busiest freeway intersection in the city, but the country, here's a little heads up for tomorrow morning: "The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the northbound San Diego Freeway (I-405) connector to the east- and westbound Ventura Freeway (U.S. 101) Sunday, October 5 from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for maintenance work. The northbound I-405 Sepulveda Boulevard on- and off-ramps will also be closed."

Yesterday the Freeway Blogger came to Los Angeles to promote peace via his easy-to-make signs placed over freeways where they get millions of impressions by passing drivers until someone comes by and takes them down. He hit at least seven spots yesterday. Did you see the signs saying "Peace" or "Peace on Earth"?

Just as rush hour was beginning for the afternoon, a six-vehicle crash involving a dump truck with a punctured fuel tank forced the California Highway Patrol to close all lanes except the car pool lane and issue a SigAlert at 4:37 p.m. this afternoon. As of 5:20 p.m., units were still on scene according to an LA Fire Department spokesperson. Three people were injured with one 24-year-old woman taken to the hospital in serious condition.
