July Fouth's "road rage" incident on Mandeville Canyon was reported here on Monday morning and the story quickly gathered steam with TV stations clamoring to interview the cyclists, the Police Captain reporting that the case would proceed as a criminal assault case and then culminating with Councilman Bill Rosendahl going on TV (video above) and referring to the Cyclists' Bill of Rights (PDF version), which addresses equality and access as basic civil rights that... My search for hard core seafood at casual prices continues, we have a pretty solid place lined up for today. Captain Kidd's in Redondo Beach is half seafood market, half restaurant. It's a little confusing, but there are three lines. One line is for drinks -- they have a good selection of beers on tap. The line in the back is where you can order combo plates or most anything else you'd like --... [continue]

American Express conducted a survey (link works only for cardholders) to find the top 10 restaurants in the Los Angeles area. Their polling group was their customers and their data was their transactions (so no subjective surveys here). The list below is based on the number of transactions: Belvedere at The Peninsula Beverly Hills Hotel Grill on the Alley Katsuya Lawry’s The Prime Rib (new cocktail menu) Napa Valley Grille The Palm Restaurant Pizzeria Mozza... LAist Obit: Harvey Korman on May 29, 2008

It is with great sadness that LAist notes the passing of comedy legend Harvey Korman who died today at the UCLA Medical Center. He was 81 years old. Korman died of complications from an abdominal aortic aneurysm that ruptured four months ago. As someone who grew up during the 1970s, weekends culminated in viewing the "Carol Burnett Show". The singing numbers were endured in order to enjoy the payoff of watching sketches and parodies featuring... [continue]

And this year's schedule so far is shaping up to be quite excellent: Cold War Kids, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Issac Hayes, Kinky, Broken Social Scene and The Black Keyes... [continue]

Photos by Lori Nyx for LAist Put down that mouse for a second and take a deep breath. Imagine yourself in a cavernous bookstore, wandering through endless stacks in search of the rare and the wonderful. Drink in the eclectic surroundings, the musty scent of wood, paper and 5 decades of history. How did you get here? Maybe you just happened to be passing the quaint 30's era store front and felt the need... [continue]

Photo by ^riza^ via Flickr Head to The Scene in Glendale tonight for some great bands (interview about tonight can be read here). You just finished filling up your tank at the gas station, but the next thing you do is not grab your keys to leave, it's to take an extra twenty seconds to note some statistics by inputting into Twitter the miles since your last fill up, the price per gallon and how many gallons you put in. Welcome to FuelFrog, a new application designed by three guys who embarked on a mission of launching a... [continue]

There are thousands of people that read this blog via their subscription to LAist's RSS (Really Simple Syndication). But sometimes when people hear the word "RSS," their faces go blank. RSS is a pretty sweet tool to know how to use. Basically, instead of visiting a handful of your favorites sites everyday to see what's new, you visit one site, your RSS Reader, and all your favorite sites are loaded into one clean space. It... It has been almost a year since the massive Griffith Park fire. In a short time, the blaze ripped through Los Angeles' beloved outdoor space, charring 800 acres and destroying popular spots such as the bird sanctuary and Dante's View. After the fire settled, the now 33-year-old photographer Colin Brown took a walk with his dog and photographed what he saw. The images are haunting, sad and unexpected. Beginning Saturday night, his photos will be... [continue]

In the previous installations of Coachella there have been some huge headliners. Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Bjork, The Beastie Boys but none quite on the level of day two's headliner, the Purple One, Prince. From the moment he hit the stage with Morris Day and Shelia E. it was apparent that the audience was in for a lesson in musicianship and showmanship. As he played through a set mixed of standards and the cover... [continue]

The Fangoria Convention isn't due to start until Friday, but the gore and the madness have already begun - and this ain't Karo syrup. Eric Caidin, owner of Hollywood Book and Poster, co-presenter of The Grindhouse Film Festival, and a longtime supporter of the horror/comic/film fan communities, was attacked in his store on Hollywood Boulevard last Friday. The alleged attacker was Michael Copner, former publisher of Cult Movies Magazine, who stabbed Caidin repeatedly in the... [continue]

We have been collecting weird Christian Records for a friend for many years. Usually the musical group is just standing on a bridge wearing hideous matching outfits. But this site has found some real gems. Check out the other galleries at Show and Tell Music too. It just goes to show, one man's Worst Album Covers Ever is another's best. Trout Mask Replica? Really? Sure, this site has a few miles on the odometer, but... [continue]

There's a massive world freeze planned for April 1st and since Los Angeles has recently gone abuzz with unexpected events that cause "chaos and joy," a new local group inspired by the East Coast Improv Everywhere has already gone out and accomplished some missions, including this above video from February 23rd at Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade. The local group, who recently dubbed themselves as GuerilLA seems to have begun after Improv Everywhere flew... [continue]
