walkamileinhershoes.jpg

One mile of walking in plastic high heels and here come the blisters (however, the height advantages are quite nice). To our female friends, we will walk as slow as you need when you are wearing high heels. In fact, high heels are not comfortable one bit, we do not recommend it anymore. Sandals are sexy (no uggs please).

Today was the 6th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Men's March in Sherman Oaks. From Sepulveda to Vesper and back (one mile total), men marched Ventura Blvd. chanting "stop rape now" and getting onlookers caught in the traffic to honk their horns.

The event raised money for the Valley Trauma Center, a program of the College of Education at California State University. The center is dedicated to the elimination of sexual and interpersonal violence through healing, empowerment and increased public awareness of prevention strategies.

What used to be a single event back in 2007 has now spread into 35 marches total around the country this year. "Violence against women does not just affect women," Founder Frank Baird said. "Men are hurt and angered when women they care about are raped." We can attest to that with three close friends that are victims. But also on one scary morning last year, we woke up in a crime scene -- our 50-year old neighbor woke up with a man in her bed.

This is for all of you! Enjoy the pictures and men, we'll see you out there next year!

The Dodgers were swept. I was also yelled at by 3 traffic cops on my way to the stadium. Juan Pierre missed the sign for the squeeze. I had to look at Barry Bonds. Nomar represented the tying run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and he struck out to end the game on his own bobblehead night. I don't really want to talk about it right now.

So instead I offer you a photo essay entitled:
What I Saw While I Waited For My Friend To Show Up With Our Tickets

USC Fountain Run

So, last night was USC's Fountain "Run", the ancient ritual signifying that finals are over and that seniors are officially done with school.

I went into it thinking it'd be like UCLA's Undie Run, which from the looks of LAist's crack coverage several weeks ago, ranks up there on the debauch-o-meter with a transatlantic flight on Joe Francis' private jet.

But this is USC.

Things here are a bit tamer, right?

Right?

Despite the apparent misnomer, near as I could tell this event consisted mostly of students wandering around campus, leisurely sloshing through assorted pools, fountains and even sprinklers, before finally getting too cold to push on.

In an orgiastic display, these newly liberated coeds -- and eds -- conquered the hapless fountains as if possessed.

The kids hopped from one to the next, screaming from each zenith, "USC!" or "We are TROJANS!" or something.

A real testament to the school's teambuilding department.

Seriously though, I had no idea this place had so many fountains.

Maybe it's a Freudian thing.

Waaaaay more pictures by S Monkey on the flip side...

her feet are warm Over the past few years, an odd phenomenon has taken over Los Angeles.

Outfits no longer make sense.

People's feet are dressed for winter and their bellies are dressed for summer (yes, that's a mere 5 degree difference here in LA, but you know what I'm getting at).

I honestly hoped this would wear off over time, and as the feet got warmer and the butts got colder (and the funny tan lines became laughable come summer time), the boots would walk themselves back into the closet and save themselves for a more appropriate use.

For a brief moment I believed that by taking photographs people would see how utterly ridiculous this trend has become and the abused-and-ashamed boots could crawl back up into the bottom hem of the pant legs where they belong, finding a safe haven beneath the bottom third of a boot cut pant, relieved they no longer have to be the prime focus of a stupid outfit.

But not in LA.

The boots just keep getting bigger and furrier and more complicated until it is unclear if that's a Yeti or an urban hipster approaching until they are 6 feet away, in which case it may simply be too late.

Join us now as we take a look at about a dozen or so more examples of Ugg-wear in LA.

A handfull of kids watch the UCLA game. More would join them when left handed batters presented the opportunity for foul balls along the left field line.

They say New York is the city that never sleeps, but nobody packs in a full day like LA. Best of all, our weather lets us do it any time of the year.

LAist's Saturday screamed Angelino, so we couldn't resist a little photo essay ...

In the next several weeks, LAist will embark on a series of hikes and present to you an ambitious 8-part photo essay. This is the second one.

Dodgers lose 7-5 Maybe LAist has been covering a lot of Dodgers lately and we should think about something else for once.

Wrong!

They're winning!

They've got the best record in the MLB! Let us bask in the glory while it lasts!

Meanwhile, yesterday's game was just plain silly. Three errors in three innings, players falling down on their faces, five broken bats, drizzly rain to make the Dodger Dogs just soggy enough, it all added up to general ridiculousness punctuated with a loss to the Pirates.

Arrrrrrrrrr!

In an attempt to get over this damp and generally yucky day, I have compiled a photo essay. Note there are no photos from the 6th and 7th innings (which involved a ball rolling through the Buc's pitcher's legs) because it was raining a bit too hard and I didn't want to get my camera wet. Sorry.

parking in chavez ravine

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Dodger Stadium parking fiascoes are old news now. I probably shouldn't even be bringing this up right now, but yesterday the spark re-ignited my Dodger Parking kindling and I'm back on the rampage. You see, I thought I'd come up with a good system, as one night last week I waited for less than 6 minutes to get out of the lot and I was very very proud of my ingenuity and ability to overcome adversity with creative problem solving (worthy of a college admissions essay, if you ask me). At yesterday's Sunday afternoon game against the Pirates, I decided to implement my plan. I arrived at the stadium an hour before game time, paid my $15 and headed up the hill to my lot, grinning at my little parking secret and laughing at the naive fans trudging up the hill next to me. "Free at last!" I thought. Well what do you know, the Walking Highlighters have decided to block my lot off with a bunch of PVC pipes and orange cones, even though it was less than 25% full. Instead they directed me to a lot which is much much farther from the exit, and then tell me to park here:

IglooJoggersWide.jpg
With global warming so topical these days, it’s fitting that non-profit research center Materials & Applications (M&A) offers a new outdoor installation in the form of an igloo. Tucked between boutiques and buildings along Silver Lake Blvd., the igloo is made not by ice and snow, but by bamboo and industrial felt. Titled Igloo/Ukendt, the structure was created by Danish artist Anja Franke, architect John Southern and lead fabricator Nick Blake. The team yearned to construct a cold weather building with techniques and warm climate materials appropriate to Southern California. Igloo/Ukendt mixes themes of tropical and arctic, hot and cold, showing us the times are a-changing with our climate.

duck the fodgers
(The inspiration for today.)

The Dodgers-Giants rivalry outdates the majority of the people at Dodger Stadium on any given day, and its importance is proven by the fact that they raise the price of tickets when the Dodgers play at AT&T-SBC-Pac Bell-telecommunications merger conglomerate Park. The low point in this rivalry was that night back in 2003 when (while leaving the park) we heard that a Dodger-fan-turned-Giants-fan was shot and killed in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium. A tragic reminder that this is just a game after all. Murders aside, I've seen dozens of fights between Dodger fans and their rivals and attended a number of Dodger away games to face the away fan music myself. Given that I have survived with only minor injury, I provide the LAist reader with a guide to leaving the opposing team's stadium in one piece.

girls gone wild If you've been to the Grove lately, you know about the American Girl Doll phenomenon: 7 year old girls dragging around $86 dolls with matching clothing that sells for about $80 per outfit for the girl (and $25 per outfit for the doll). Every westside 2nd grader must have a doll, and leaving the Grove without $300 worth of American Girl Place Merchandise is a cause for shame.

Despite the fact that dolls were traditionally for "kids," it seems Mattel's effort here is actually having the opposite effect. Our little American girls are worried about class, brand name, and commercialism. The priorities have shifted, and now they're turning into annoying mini-versions of their middle-class brand-whore parents who learn early that elitism is a virtue.

dodger players were all wearing the right number

One of our favorite LA photographers, Malingering, went to the Dodger game last night. She has a great eye for both fashion and sports. We wonder if she would ever be an LAist contributer? Hmmmm. One can dream.

Last night, of course, was Jackie Robinson Day all around the country, including Chavez Ravine, where Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson and even Jennifer Hudson showed up to honor an American hero.

Year of the Dog's Laura Dern and Molly Shannon with writer/director Mike White

OK, so we were invited to the Paramount lot -- but wouldn't it be more dramatic if we crashed it? Could additional drama even be necessary at the premiere of a movie about relationships, work, death, and dogs, with a tagline begging the question: "Has the world left you a stray?" Year of the Dog hits theaters next Friday, the 13th.

We snapped several photos of the movie's stars as well as some notable fangirls (Drew Barrymore, Shondrella Avery [aka LaFonda], Tia Carrere) who confessed to the temptation to throw themselves at writer/director Mike White. Year of the Dog is White's directorial debut but he is already revered for his hilarious writing and his classic, jokester mug. His previous credits include Nacho Libre, School Of Rock, Orange County, and Chuck & Buck.

Josh Pais (who plays Molly Shannon's boss in the movie) told us why he (like everyone else) was so psyched to work on White's directorial debut.
