Of Riot Gear and Rubber Bullets

may day immigration rally macarthur park los angeles lapd riot gear rubber bullets

Wilshire & Alvarado - May Day

The presence of a police force lined up with riot gear presupposes trouble. And when someone supposedly threw a bottle near MacArthur Park Tuesday evening, it was a call to action. Or as Chief Bratton later rationalized: "Missiles were being thrown at the officers, and officers [were] responding."

Last year's May Day march down Wilshire featured amiable members of LA's finest police and fire squads lined up on the side of Wilshire chilling out -- dressed normally (in uniform), but with riot gear and more at the ready in nearby cars. And nothing happened. Everybody, the authorities included, appeared to be having a good time.

Oh except for when darkness fell and police appeared to swarm and beat an unarmed man in front of the Alvarado Red Line Station (video after the jump) as the protest had all but ended.

Once again, last night on Alvarado near Wilshire, where the above photo was taken, saw the forceful removal of mostly peaceful protesters and the police flexed their muscle. The gathering was expected and announced well in advance, just like last year's that drew nearly a half million, and the march up Broadway earlier Tuesday, not to mention the Bulls championship-like gathering of an estimated 150,000 in Chicago's Grant Park.

There are countless arguments to be made about the effectiveness and purpose of demonstrations/marches/rallies/excessive celebrations, as we've seen here. But riot gear and rubber bullets in a public space brings out only the worst of a predominantly passive, well-intentioned, and now-terrified crowd.

Wow! A typical liberal response from a typical liberal writer who probably wasn’t there. I’m guessing that this writer received a phone call from her amigos at La Raza or some other reqonquista neo fascist organization. Listen, it must feel great to graduate from a prestigious school that your parents probably paid for and to take a cushy job as a liberal writer to stick it to the “MAN”. The man being the police of course.

But let’s get off the writer for now and analyze what happened yesterday. What other country in the world allows people who break the law (illegal aliens) to protest and demand amnesty? Huh? Where on god’s green earth can a faction of law breakers use tax payer money to protest “unfairness” and “demand equality” while their children are getting free education and health coverage our tax payer expense? Yes they are part of the working force, but I’ve never heard of harsh labor camps or cruelty in the work place. If that happens they should complain or just go home.

The police stepped in when the violators left MacArthur Park and violated the free speech zone. The police stepped in and quelled the situation, which could have gotten worce, with rubber bullets. Hey liberal! Try that in Venezuela with (again, I’m guessing) your hero Hugo Chavez. Those bullets wouldn’t be rubber.

To wrap this up, and again, where in the world can we allow lawbreakers to protest, police hating liberals to write and common thinking guys like me to stand up and support the cops who protect the common citizen. HUH!?!?!? God bless the USA!!!!

Typical right-wing comment from a typical dumb nativist (Craig) who definitely wasn't there. According to all accounts I've read from people and media who were actually at the event, the altercation with police happened on the street not in the park, and police began shooting into the crowd without warning to disperse. Shooting into crowds of families, children and the elderly. Just because a bullet is not "lethal" doesn't mean it's not dangerous, especially if it hits a young child in the face or neck.

I'm not even going to answer your moronic rant on how protesting by immigrants is illegal in every single country in the world except the U.S. Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. Even Venezuela has large scale protests by the opposition, numbnuts.

Frankly it's sad that you're so blinded by your nativist agenda that you see no problem in innocent families being abused by police. People like you are a stain on this great nation.

cushy job as a liberal writer

I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the writers of laist didn't get paid. Go fig.

Jon,

you are correct

What the heck is a nativist? I was born in the USA, so does that make me a typical dumb nativist?

This story was written pretty objectively, and I appreciate the writer not turning this into a soapbox to speak about further discrimination against immigrants because of this incident. Folks were throwing bottles at the officers, and the police just went overboard with their use of force. Seems like it could happen at any mass protest. I heard a KPCC reporter saying she could not see any badges on the officers wearing riot gear. That's going to have to change after today.

I'm fourth generation German/Irish American and I was disgusted and angered by that "show of force."

No prominent mention of it in the LATimes. No pictures. And "rubber bullets" have become "foam bullets."

Bratton's contract should not be renewed.

Navivist? Nativist?? Well do I get a fig leaf with that comment? Ooops, I thought you were referring to a naturalist. So I digress. But let’s go to you Roger. When you use the word nativist, I’m guessing you are one of two people: #1. The touchy feely type guy who learned this word at the college quad by members of any far left (fill in the blank) organization or from NPR. You know the guy that was never good in sports and was awkward around girls so he went introverted only to manifest his hate amongst all people. Or #2; you are that college guy that hits da chornic way too much. That guy lives in the basement of his parents home, walks around in your robe all day, despises everyone who is successful (see #1) and has little or no friends. I’ll take a guess and say you are the later.

SO that being said, you probably have a rasta hat covering you nappy hair (note the relevant words to today current issues). After you signed off of moveon.org, I love George Soros.com and We love flagburning.net, you hit this site and read my comments. All this while you smoked your daily spleef by 9am. My comments frosted your hide and your put your shout out. Now let’s discuss the issue at hand.

When the police say something to a crowd it’s generally a good idea to do what they say. I saw the video and saw many of your type were throwing bottles, taunting the cops and being verbally abusive. You know what rasta boy, police are as human as me and y… well, they get upset when a crowd get’s unruly. What were they supposed to do, wait around until one of your people hurt another protester? I bet you were bitching about the shooting at Virginia Tech saying: “Where were the police?” “Why didn’t they do more?”

See, nothing is ever good enough for you. A typical liberal, like you, will always complain but never offer any solutions. Protest! Protest! But when the camera asks you what to do you have nothing to add. Maybe it’s time to stop drinking the bong water and get a real job that pays money so you can look at your pay stub and marvel: “Gee where’s all my tax dollars going”, then and only then can you be a true nativist.

Yes, nativist. I don’t care what your definition of nativist is, but mine is a native of this great country that allows even jerks like you to be someone, anyone. If you go to school, work hard and follow the rules you’d be surprised what you can accomplish. Heck, even if you don’t, you may still be in luck and turn into Jessie Jackson (the true American Terrorist).

It’s people like you that truly give this great land a bad name. You are probably pull for the US to fail in Iraq, praying for more terrorist hits in America, cheering when the ACLU urinates on the common man; all the while you hang your Obama posters in your basement. Don’t you ever judge me until you sober up, kick the chronic and make your parents proud.

Thanks for illustrating why the Republican Party will remain in the wilderness for your the rest of your lifetime, Craig.

Who says I'm a Republican?

Libertarians will also spend time in the re-education camps, Craig.

So will assholes.

whenever anarchists are caught on video doing what they vow to do preceding and during every protest action, the "predominantly passive" majority all exclaim, "you mustn't conflate us with them!" and proceed to explain how one can't account for all elements within their "broad coalition".

but whenever the image and portrayal of a confrontation can be controlled, the "predominantly passive" participate in the frameing of the confrontation as another kent state. even though the confrontation is a very specialized thing consistently occurring between masked anarchists equipped to provoke confrontation and armored cops equipped to anticipate their antics.

please cut the horseshit charade.

Craig,
I'm afraid you are wasting your time here. The kiddies here haven't been around long enough to see exactly how these people are ruining LA. These kids don't pay their own way, have to look for work, pay taxes, put their kids in school, etc.
It was long understood that if you mess with the cops, you get thumped, period. You may be in the right, you may be in the wrong, it doesn't matter. When cops say disperse, you do it. The newspeople that got whacked asked for it. Here's why; news crews ALWAYS follow behind the cop line. It's safe that way, and they can record what's going on without getting hurt. These newspeople wanted this, asked for this, and deserve more than what they got. Lucky dogs, all of them. Peaceful demonstrations don't include pulling a watch commander off his motorcycle, or throwing rocks and bottles. There may have been innocent people there for sure, used as pawns by enemys of LA and the US. That's right assholes, those poor immigrants you defend are victims of their own people. Mexicans that have been here and know the system, prey on these people. The cops are there to protect citizens of the USA. It's an awful shame that innocent people get caught up in this kind of a deal, but put the blame where it belongs; mexicans, anarchists, criminals, professional rioters, La Raza, even the racist asshole mayor. The cops were doing their job, and you all should be thankful for that.
Respond to this if you want, but I'm gone for good after posting this you stupid, snotty, unappreciative little mammas boys. You talk tough, but you aint shit till you can pay your own way in this world, and none of you seem capable of that, yet. If you could, you wouldn't be defending the very people who are raping you. Put that in your crackpipe and smoke it.

To Wake Up,
Yep, you are probably right, we can't find reason amongst liberals.

You can't find intellectual honesty amongst people who are unwilling to transcend the smallness of their own minds.

"Countries are children that need to grow and become adult, become planet Earth, become cosmos." - Alejandro Jodorowsky

And there you have it.
