Meet Soul Asylum, Free Slurpees, Give Blood

mercedes2.jpg

Oh thank Heaven! Today is 7/11. Happy 7/11. All good little boys and girls can go to 7/11s today and get a free lil Slurpee-brand ice and sugar drink for nada. The LA Daily News tells us that each store will only have 500 specially marked cups to hand out free Slurpees in, so run out of work NOW and get yours. But beware the Brain Freeze! see above

Minnesota rockers Soul Asylum return to LA for a cd signing at the famous Tower on Sunset, followed by a show at the Troubador. You might remember the quartet from such hits as "Runaway Train" and "Misery", but LAist is olde school - we remember "Cartoon" "Somewhere to Return" and the classic long-playing b-side "James at 16" which celebrated the sloppiness of their former label-mates The Replacements.

Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy will do a short acoustic set at Tower starting at 6pm. The press release says "You'll need to purchase the new CD ["The Silver Lining" - which drops today] at Tower Sunset on July 11th to receive a wrist-band for the performance & signing. Wrist-bands are limited." And because it must suck to have Winona Ryder's name forever linked to this band, we won't curse them with that here. Oh crap.

After the jump we have a video that was mentioned in a previous post, but it was buried in the Area Code story. It's disturbing that two people who are simply taking pictures end up getting beaten by the LAPD - EVEN WHEN THEY ARE DOWN - but if anything it shows you how important donating blood is.

And apparently, according to the Daily News, LA hospitals need you to donate blood Pronto as we only have an 8-hour supply, currently.

yeah Chicago is going through some tough times on the blood donation front as well...

its really just that time of the year though. Blood donation is always way down in the summer, people are traveling and students are out of school.
