Five Things Not To Miss At The Eastside Food Fest This Sunday


The fourth annual Eastside Food Fest is coming to Silver Lake this Sunday, and it's safe to assume everyone and their quartz-toting, essential-oil-smudged girlfriend will be there to Instagram their vegan baked goods. Even the most organized of food festivals can be overwhelming at times, so we've put together a roundup of what not to miss at the always-popular event, which will feature food from 35 different local restaurants.

Wine by Eric Wareheim. You might know Eric Wareheim as half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, or from his role as affable, pasta-loving Arnold on Master of None, but did you know he's also an amateur winemaker? Wareheim will be at EastSide Food Fest on Sunday to pour VIP ticketholders glasses of his Las Jaras Wines creation, a "sultry, cloudy, offbeat and unadulterated" Carignan from Mendocino, CA. Sure, it's no Dr. Steven Brule "Sweetberry Wine," but it still sounds pretty damn good. Wareheim will be offering tastes of his new wines from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the Woodshop Stage in the Mack Sennett Vendor Hall.

Cannabis Cooking 101 food demo. It's 2017 in Los Angeles, and the weed-cuisine narrative has officially been exhausted. That said, weed cuisine itself is the gift that keeps on giving, and Chef Brandin Lashea, host of the "Pot Pie" video series, will join Chopped winner Luke Reyes to demonstrate how to make "a simple cannabis infused meal using high quality, culinary cannabis infused products." Guests can also enjoy "limited tastes" after the demonstration, but try not to overdo it. The Cannabis cooking demo will be held on the main stage from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

"Alta California" cuisine panel with local Mexican chefs. There's no denying the impact that Mexican cuisine has had on the L.A. food scene, and James Beard Award-winning writer Bill Esparza, author of LA Mexicano, will host a panel on Sunday devoted to exploring precisely that topic. Panelists will include Rick Garcia of Dia de los Puercos, Susanna MacManus of Cielito Lindo, Chef Eduardo Ruiz of Corazon y Miel, and Eat Mexico cookbook author Lesley Téllez. The Alta California cuisine panel will be held from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on the main stage.

Starry Kitchen will make a comeback.
Remember Nguyen Tran, the banana suit-wearing chef behind the underground food sensation Starry Kitchen? He'll be on hand Sunday to talk about his new cookbook Adventures of Starry Kitchen, and—we can only pray—to fling crispy tofu balls into the crowd like confetti. Tran's Q&A and book signing will take place from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. on the Woodshop Stage in the Mack Sennett Vendor Hall.

The food, duh. Between "weed cuisine" and Eric Wareheim's wine, this year's Eastside Food Fest promises to have you feeling no pain. That said, the lineup this year is worth staying sharp for; the 35 restaurants offering samples at the event include We Have Noodles, Jeni's Ice Creams, Hot Hot Food, Winsome and Go Get 'Em Tiger.

(With all due respect to the Eastside Food Fest, we feel the need to point out that Silver Lake, where the festival will take place, is technically not the Eastside. Don't let that stop you from enjoying the food, though.)

The Eastside Food Fest will take place at Mack Sennett Studios, 1215 Bates Ave, in Silver Lake on Sunday, October 22 from 4-7 p.m. Ticket tiers include Non-Drinker ($50 advance), GA ($65 advance), and VIP ($85 advance). A raffle will take place during the event to benefit PATH, a family of agencies working together to end homelessness for local individuals, families, and communities.
