Unholy Guacamole: Layer Dip Recall For Potential 'Avocado Pulp' Contamination

Don't dip! Fresh Food Concepts, Inc. is voluntarily recalling a variety of Layer Dip products containing guacamole over concerns that the avocados used may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the FDA.

The Buena Park company says the products were distributed nationwide and in Canada through club stores and supermarkets. Check UPC codes and Use By dates to identify potential offenders. Here's the recall list:

Products with expiration dates 09/24/11 and after were made with alternately sourced avocados and are safe to eat. An FDA routine sampling program "revealed that the imported AVOCADO PULP used in these products contained the bacteria." Fresh Food Concepts, Inc. has "ceased the use of avocado from the supplier."

Serious, sometimes fatal, infections can develop in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems who are exposed to Listeria. Short-term symptoms for the healthy may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
