I'm thankful that my mom always confuses Thanksgiving with Columbus Day, and then makes lasagne instead of turkey and pumpkin pie, and then says: "Puritans. Columbus. They're both genocidal land-thieves. Now shut-up and eat your lasagne or I'll tell all your progressive friends that you came over for Thanksgiving dinner." I'm also thankful for my Mommy Dearest DVD.

I'm thankful for the we're-not-afraid-of-you-humans attitude of the Los Angeles deer population. The deer are equally happy that we don't get together with our buddies to try to make them into venison sausage.

I'm thankful for free online documentary web sites like freedocumentaries.org for making me smarter without having to pay tuition fees.

I'm thankful for I Love Lucy re-runs. Desi Arnaz is STILL sexy.

I'm thankful for/beholden to/grateful for/indebted to/contented with/much obliged/appreciative of time-saving online thesauri.

I thankful for the folks at 5124 DeLongpre Ave for their special kind of Charles Bukowski-type historical preservation.

I'm thankful that the news on KCOP is so fucking ridiculous.

I'm thankful for Vice magazine and the hardcore journalistic gods that work for Vice. I just wish the apathetic hipsters that read the magazine would take a hint and do something about all the atrocities that Vice reports on.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
