Wanted: “Only in LA” Gift Ideas

snipshot_e41173q558vt.jpg
A friend is flying in from Australia on Friday. It’s his first trip to Los Angeles, and he comes bearing gifts. Authentic, “only in Australia” kinds of gifts. I’m talking Penfolds red wine. I’m talking an Akubra hat. I’m talking a stuffed koala for my son (in Pietà form no less, cradling another tiny stuffed baby koala that sings Waltzing Matilda. Fuckin’ show off).

I thought I’d forgo the “here, have a fridge magnet” approach to visitor gifts this time and match his generous local-oriented gift bestowing by offering some unique, “only in LA” swag. Then, I hit a brick wall. We don’t have any freakin’ special hats. Or unique, symbolic yet cuddly animals to give away in stuffed form. Hell, even our local wines kind of suck.

After mulling over a number of totally inappropriate LA gifts, including one of those red Skooby’s hats, a freeze-dried animal style burger, a bootleg DVD from the streets of the Fashion District and the Kim Kardashian/Ray J sex tape, I put the question to my fellow LAisters. The responses have provided a rare look at the material things that best represent a trip to our city, but nothing that matches the pure "Aussie-ness" of his stuff:

1. An LA County Coroner Beach Towel (pictured)

2. See's Candies

3. Hustler Lap Dance Hi-Ball Glasses

4. In-N-Out Burger t-shirt

5. A framed photo of the Griffith Park Fire

6. A Dodgers hat

7. A Lakers Jersey

8. A freeze-dried Pink's hot dog (I have been assured it can be done)

9. An authentic movie prop

10. My most recent parking ticket

I have until Friday morning to pick up the gift, so I also put this question to the readers. What “only in LA” gift under 25 bucks would you buy an out of town guest?

Maybe you should head to the Getty. Last time I was there I remember seeing some cool stuff in the gift shop. I don't have any specific ideas, but I'm sure they'll have something cool.

I think the LACMA gift shop has some great stuff as well.

This is a brilliant question! I, too, have come up dry when I try to think of ideas for gifts to give out of town visitors. I've done the Santa Barbara County wine deal a few times. If only the Craftsman Brewery in Pasadena would sell me growlers of their delicious Triple White Sage, I could give that to everyone!

There's a wonderful miniature at the Norton Simon Museum's store of the Degas statue "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" that's part of the permanent collection. I'd suggest you call first to make sure they have not sold out. It's a bit over $25 (like around $50), but it's worth it!

Some more L.A. gift ideas:
Phillipe hot mustard
C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sauce (Lawry's owns them now)
LAPD "professional courtesy" KMA-367 license plate frames, though I don't think they're relevant or produced anymore. Maybe look for a Sheriff's KMA-628 frame instead.

How about:

- A framed photo of yourself with a famous person
- A Dennis Woodruff movie on VHS
- A cloth bag from Amoeba Records (not useful if your visitors are from the Bay Area but otherwise cool)
- A role in an SF Valley porno production

The ever-popular LAFD T-shirts are often requested by those visiting our City.

They and other Los Angeles Fire Department logo items can be purchased by the public at Dalmatian's Firehouse, 2900 West Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90026

I always like the Dodgers hat idea. I've had the same dilemma. I gave my ex-girlfriend (from Italy) my Dodgers hat.

How about some smog in a jar? That's pretty L.A. Or, you can buy some silicone gel. A tub of Zankou Chicken garlic sauce, perhaps?

Something from the Chinese Theatre?

Take them to the Jewelry District at night and let them get a mugging - that'll be one to remember.

how about an "i (stomach) LA" t-shirt.

ESP. if they didn't love their visit, right?
