LAist visits: the neon of Grand Central Market

economymeats.jpg

The Grand Central Market has sold meats, veggies and more since 1917. It reaches from Broadway to Hill between 3rd and 4th in downtown LA. In addition to the groceries on hand, it has a dozen stalls serving prepared food (mmmm, pupusas) and one liquor store in the corner. The neighborhood has come up with all the new downtown lofts, but you can still find people buying their Mad Dog at the booze counter, which makes us feel oddly welcome.

Descriptive neon signs hang over many of the stalls. They look so perfectly vintage, we can't help wonder if they were created by skilled Hollywood propspeople; our photos here.

I think most of the signs were commissioned by Brenda Levin to look "perfectly vintage" when she refurbished the market: http://www.levinarch.com/urban/grand.html

What a coincidence, I just posted some photos I took at the market a while ago on my blog today.

I love the Economy Meats neon sign ... a must see for any neon lover.
